The refurbishment of the Plaza de la Constitution de Villanueva del Río Segura completed during the second half of the month of August when there will also be completed the refurbishment of the square side of the Town Hall and the remodeling adjacent streets.

The work, which has had a total cost of 501,000 euros, was financed by 75 percent by the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport, which has provided 376,159 euros, and 25 percent by the city, with 125,386 euros.

In the Plaza of the Constitution are located the City Hall, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in the neoclassical style and completed in 1882, whose construction, with plans of Juan de Villanueva, dates from the eighteenth century, and the Center Cultural Infanta Cristina, so that the action will affect the urban space to undertake more representative of the municipality.

The aim of the initiative has focused on providing residents of Villanueva del Río Segura a public space for living that will become the center of social life in the municipality.

The general director of Housing and Architecture, Mark Nogueroles, called the project "of great interest because it is the comprehensive restructuring of public space more representative of Villanueva del Río Segura, a performance that will significantly improve the visual relationship of the square with the surrounding landscape, and that, thanks to the renovation, will recover the views of the valley from the square. "

Also Nogueroles welcomed "the results of the promotion of quality architectural spaces and public buildings of the various municipalities in the region, thanks to the grant program to local authorities in the field of architecture that has prompted the Ministry Public Works, Housing and Transportation. "

Ideas Competition

Given the current layout of the streets surrounding the project implemented encapsulated in the intervention area the square side of the Town Hall, with direct access to the Plaza to the Constitution and which was restored in 1997 - and the rest of spaces around the City Hall, from the proposed redevelopment winner of a contest of ideas promoted by the Municipality of Villanueva del Río Segura, which was funded by the Ministry of Public Works, through the Directorate General of Housing and Architecture.

Among the actions that have been made, emphasizes the revival of the different elements of street furniture like bus shelters bus stop and the installation of a new lighting system in the square and the church building.
